Let me make this clear: I do not have anything against superheroes, zombie movies, apocalyptic adventures or animated films. They all have their place and their particular audience in the world. However, due to the trend of heavy-handed dramas and scary movies, it can be very challenging to find a good comedy movie that I enjoy, laugh and smile at and can actually relate to. When I watch a movie, it is to escape the craziness of my everyday life, not to feel weighed down or emotionally drained at the end of my short break from life. Everything is so wrapped up in a fantasy world and sequels that it seems nothing real comes out to the movies anymore. I really miss the real movies. The movies that were grounded in reality, that connected to what I am experiencing, and help me more connected with others in the world. I want a light film that will make me laugh out loud, instead of another superhero sequel. I guess what I am saying is that we really need is a good parent comedy.
Finding Humor in Parenthood
There are SO MANY parents in this world. Being a parent connects me with people I don’t know all over the world, simply because they have experienced what it is like to be responsible for another human life. I feel like parents or parents-to-be are a huge audience that Hollywood seems to be making too few films about. As a parent, I know what it is like to go through pregnancy with a partner for the first time and the feelings and crazy situations that come up all too often over the months of pregnancy and the first year. Until you have been in those shoes, it may be hard to grasp just how hard it can be, how draining it can be emotionally and physically, and how funny it can be with all of the things that happen to you along the way. A movie that captures all of these things is pretty rare – and parents should share the ones that they have found. We’re all experiencing similar things, right? We are all feeling the drain of parenthood: the ups, the pull-ups, the downs, the way way way downs (poop smeared on walls, anyone?) and everything in between. I think that as a collective, we should be sharing those experiences more with one another – and if we find something that relates to parenting that could help connect one another, it’s up to us to share it. That’s what I am doing for you, right now.
You Can Find a Good Parent Comedy Movie Like This
Now for the question: Is there a good parent comedy out there today that fits this bill? Besides the ones that we have already seen a million ads for? Thankfully, there is! AND I FOUND IT!
It’s called “The Babymoon” and you should see it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. TRUST ME. This movie takes a unique approach to what it is like for expectant parents that think they are just taking a romantic trip to strengthen their relationship before craziness breaks in. Of course, in true adventure-comedy fashion, craziness finds them instead… in the middle of a jungle. Pregnant. Attempting to thwart a kidnapping. (Did I mention that she’s super pregnant in the jungle… attempting to thwart a KIDNAPPING!? Yeah. Not the ideal babymoon… but a really funny one.)
I’m sharing this because I think that parents deserve a movie like this. Parents spend so much time preparing for the baby and then suddenly the baby is here, and you realize that you have no idea how to be a parent. This film hits the nail on the head with that feeling, and helps you realize that you are not alone in the questions and uncertainty that arises during pregnancy. I don’t want to give too much away, because it really is a fun film to just watch. If you’re a parent, watch it to reminisce and be entertained. If you’re pregnant, watch it to feel connected to the other pregnant women of this world. If you’re a friend, watch it to get a glimpse into your pregnant friend’s world. If you’re anything else, watch it just because it’s a really great indie film and the relationships are relateable.
